Interview with Bade Ghulam Ali Khan

Javaid Ali Khan has kindly shared with us one of Bade Ghulam Ali Khan’s interviews - conducted by Uma Sharma - and we are posting it here:
Interview - Part I (wma)
Interview - Part II (wma)
On a geeky note, images at this site are now being managed with Picasa Web Albums instead of the Photopress plugin, which for all its charm and seamlessness was getting buggier with subsequent upgrades.

Truley an avtar of TAN SEN. He followed the same suit as he sung the actual gayeki of Gwalior. He sung everything beautifully but his two astais are my favourite. “Kinare Kinare” and “Allah jane, Mola jane, Ali Nabi per noor barse, Jag men Hassan Hussain do nain” belonging purely to Gwalior Gharana. He learnt from Khansaheb Ustad MUbarak ALi khan of Karachi and Sandhay khan(Shinde khan) as well. History will never see another vocalist like him ever again and thanks a million for uploading this interview.

The greatest musician ever, Bade Ghulam Ai Khan is incomparable. I was fortunate enough to attend his concerts in Madras on 2 occasions when I was 5 and 9 (in 1954 and 1958). On the second occasion I remember seeing almost all the Carnatic vidwans in attendance. Khan Saheb himself appeared very special, very short, with a big paunch and slow gait. I first listened to his records when I was 2. I have heard several great musicians since then but it was downhill all the way! My own Ustad (Imrat Khan saheb) has several interesting anecdotes about Bade Ghulam Saheb.

He is an ocean, no limits to his sangeet.
He makes us cry, he heals us too, no wonder the moar was dancing.
Akbar-e Azam would be very sad up there, as to why he could not get him, somebody must have told him that BGAK belongs to us, the “public”.
Thank you, it was a gem.

The interview was so fresh sounding as if it were recorded today. Ustad BGAK was very sincere and open, unlike some modern secretive musicians, who are so narrow minded. It’s a pity that the interviewer was not very imaginative in asking some more important and relevant questions.
Thanks for posting this and more recent updates. Keep up the great work in promoting our classical music, which we all know is a dying art due to overwhelming influence of pop (paap) music for the last 20 years or so.
Yours truly,
SHAUKAT HUSSAIN JANJUA

I am lucky to have spent a sizable portion of my life with my Ustad Khansahib Munawar Ali Khan and heard so much about Bade Khansahib. Later, Begum Allah Rakhi, Bade Khansahib’s wife too told me a lot about my Dada Ustad, but this recording was a unique experience. My stay with Begum Zahir Yaar Jung’s family at Hyderabad was also very enrichin. This interview has evoked all those wonderful memories. I could almost smell the aura of my ustad’s home in Kolkata or Mumbai or the atmosphere in Hyderabad or the lanes of Lahore.
