A number of people have asked about a rendering of the Yaman bandish “kinare, kinare…” by Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. The following is a link to a snippet by Munawwar Ali Khan. A full length cassette recording by Pt. Ajoy Chakraborty was available many years ago and I am sure many posters have it.

Does anyone know where I can find recordings of the “Kinare Kinare” bandish? I have found only one recording by Ajay Chakravarty. I have been searching especially for Bade Ghulam Ali Khansahib’s recording for this beautiful bandish and haven’t found it yet.
By the way, check out some videos of qawwalis and classical music that I have uploaded on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=kamalhyder

The bandish “Kinare kinare” is often heard from Indian artistes, especially those associated with Patiala Gharana. But I have also heard it performed by vocalists from outside that gharana, notably the late Pt. Kumar Gandharva. I have also heard it played as a ‘gat’ on the sitar by Shujaat Hussain Khan, the son of Ustad Vilayat Khan.

I was able to obtain the bandish from both Shrutinandan, the school established by Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty (courtesy of Mr. Ashoke Chaterjee), and from the Sangeet Research Academy in Calcutta. According to Arpita Chaterjee of the SRA Academic Research Department, this is a Delhi Gharana bandish of Ustad Tanras Khan. The text follows. I would appreciate if someone can post the exact translation.
Kinare, kinare, kinare, kinare dariya kashti bandho re,
Mauj aaye bhare ulfat mein khizar
I kadar meherbaani bekuney
Aa rang rangile aashnarey
Kinare dariya.
