  1. (1)Ustad Salamat Ali’s taans are out of this world, they were unmatchable in his heyday. He was a superhuman being and I had the pleasure of meeting him a few times; we even ate from the same plate.
    (2) I have heard Gandhari of Hamid Ali of Gwalior before, and I would like to hear more items from this artist. I haven’t had the chance to listen to the rest of the various artists.

  2. Dear Dr. Taimur,

I have got another song in basant from the same film ‘mauseqar’ sung by Ustad Nazakatali, Ustad Salamatali & Naseem Begum.

How do I send you ? Shall I post the link here ?

    Thanks for your work.

  3. Other films (apart from ‘Mauseqar’) where ustad salamatali has given
playback singing, are Jalsaghar, Taj mahal, Amar samadhi, Badnaam,
    Geet kahi sangeet kahi.
There may be other names too.

  9. I was able to obtain the bandish from both Shrutinandan, the school established by Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty (courtesy of Mr. Ashoke Chaterjee), and from the Sangeet Research Academy in Calcutta. According to Arpita Chaterjee of the SRA Academic Research Department, this is a Delhi Gharana bandish of Ustad Tanras Khan. The text follows. I would appreciate if someone can post the exact translation.

Kinare, kinare, kinare, kinare dariya kashti bandho re,
Mauj aaye bhare ulfat mein khizar

    I kadar meherbaani bekuney
    Aa rang rangile aashnarey
    Kinare dariya.

    1. Thanks, I had been looking for the complete text for this one. The meaning seems to be:

کنارے کنارے کنارے کنارے دریا کشتی باندھو
kinaare kinaare kinaare kinaare darya kashti baandho
Tie up the boat by the river shore
موج آئے بہرِ الفت میں خضر
mauj aaye bahr-i ulfat men khizar
Let joyous waves surge in the sea of friendship, Khizar*

      اینقدر مہربانی بکنی
      een-qadr mihrbaani bi-kuni
      Do me the kindness of…
      آ رنگ رنگیلا آشنا رے
      aa rang rangeele aashna re
Coming to me, my rakish gallant

      * Khizar: ‘Patron saint’ of boatsmen/those who travel by sea

(The third line is Persian, and my transliteration is according to the Tehrani accent, which is the only one I properly know so far. Here all the ‘ye’s are ma’ruf. The proper South Asian style will have some ‘ye’s which are majhul, hence the pronunciation of such letters will be slightly different.)

  10. The bandish “Kinare kinare” is often heard from Indian artistes, especially those associated with Patiala Gharana. But I have also heard it performed by vocalists from outside that gharana, notably the late Pt. Kumar Gandharva. I have also heard it played as a ‘gat’ on the sitar by Shujaat Hussain Khan, the son of Ustad Vilayat Khan.

  11. Does anyone know where I can find recordings of the “Kinare Kinare” bandish? I have found only one recording by Ajay Chakravarty. I have been searching especially for Bade Ghulam Ali Khansahib’s recording for this beautiful bandish and haven’t found it yet.

By the way, check out some videos of qawwalis and classical music that I have uploaded on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=kamalhyder

    1. For Bade Ghulam Ali Khan saheb’s rendering of “kinare kinare” listen to from 19:20 to 26:36.

    1. Recently Pt. Ajoy Chakraborty’s rendition of this bandish got deleted from YouTube. If you still have it, then please try to make it available for people. I can’t get it out of my head. It was most perfect.

  12. The bandish ‘Kinare Kinare’ is also available in a published title by Pt Kumar Gandharva. The same title also features Pooriya Dhanashree by Pt Kumar Gandharva.

  13. i am searching for a full length rendition of savani nat and pancham by kishori amonkar. can anybody help?
